The most technical of mastic asphalt projects to complete successfully is asphalt tanking. Asphalt tanking is usually used to damp proof below ground level. It is applied direct to the sub floor and walls and where the water pressure is high, it is always completed in sinc. with other building trades. It has to be bricked in, with the bricks preventing the water pressure from pushing the asphalt tanking away from the walls. Where water pressure is low as in most cellar conversions, a good coat of primer is usually enough to keep the mastic asphalt anchored to the walls. After tanking has been applied its function is to keep out water and damp.

Each layer is knitted in, with the covering top layers again sealing the underlying mastic asphalt joints .
